What motivates people to volunteer
August 24, 2019
There are a lot of things that motivate people to do volunteer work, most often those things being of altruistic or philanthropic nature. The most important thing to remember is that volunteering needs to be unconditional and without any kind of financial gain. In researching what motivates people to engage in volunteer work the most, the first reason people stated was helping others. This is encouraging because helping others is the idea and the primary goal of volunteering. Here are some other reasons that motivate people to engage in volunteering:
- the cause is really important to them (emotional connection to the reason of helping or the person/organization being helped)
- volunteering being connected to the needs of their family or friends
- interest in the work is also a strong motivator, along with having spare time and wanting to learn or gain experience that will help in the future career
- their own community being in need is a big motivator for people to engage in volunteer work
- the big percentage of people stated that it is their philosophy of life or part of religious beliefs to help others
