Traveling the World

Challenges of volunteering abroad

Every good thing in life has its challenges. Maybe even that’s what makes it so satisfying and good? Volunteering abroad is no exception.

  • Traveling itself is a physical challenge, and coming to a new destination to do work can be even more tiring. Make sure you know where you are going and what is expected from you, be prepared for that, and do not agree to do anything that you were not previously told about. Unless, of course, you are willing to.
  • New dietary requirements. Every culture has its own cuisine, some being more of your taste and some not. The part of traveling to new cultures is trying new things, and most of the developed countries will offer you an array of food choices. If you are traveling to less developed countries, there is a possibility that choices will be limited, so make sure you know what to expect.
  • Differences influenced by culture or religion. People of western cultures going to eastern countries may have problems adapting, and vice versa. Be informed on local customs and traditions and make sure to be respectful.
  • Feeling lonely and homesick is bound to happen at some point. But be sure that you will feel the same way when leaving your new friends.
