An Altruistic Activity

Barriers that stop people from volunteering

Sometimes the barriers are simple, like lacking time, getting busier with family life or work consuming more time. Sometimes, health problems or old age are the reasons people cannot engage in volunteering activities anymore. A lot of people state that they lost interest after a while because they did not feel like they were getting anything in return, and a lot of them said that to them it was only a one- time activity. Some of the concerning reasons that people stated were that they have never been asked to volunteer, or not knowing any groups that need help. This is pretty concerning because, in the modern world, modern people who have all their needs fulfilled should have the moral and altruistic need to go and engage in helping other, less lucky, living beings. Other barriers people stated are:

  • moving away from the area- lacking the incentive to do research and find new volunteering positions
  • losing interest in the group or organization they were involved with
  • the activity was connected to school or job that they have now left
  • feeling that the efforts were not appreciated by the people in charge
  • group or organization closing
  • feeling that the group or organization activities were not properly organized, or that they were too bureaucratic
